Behavior Differences That Affect Treatment
Roof rats are the dominant rat species in Brevard County. True to their name, they're excellent climbers and typically enter homes through the roofline — gaps around soffit vents, ridge vents, plumbing stacks, and where utility lines enter the attic. They nest in attics, ceiling voids, and palm trees. They're cautious and may avoid new objects (including traps) for days.
House mice are curious and will investigate new objects immediately, making them easier to trap — but harder to exclude because they can squeeze through gaps as small as 1/4 inch (about the diameter of a pencil). They nest in wall voids, under appliances, in garages, and in storage boxes.
This behavioral difference is why treatment matters: snap traps placed near entry points work quickly for mice but may take days to catch cautious rats. Rats often require a pre-baiting period where unset traps with food are left out until the rats are comfortable approaching them.
Why Identification Matters for Brevard County Homes
